Spinning Paper Ideas

Ok I very quickly photoshoped some papers to get an idea of what they might look like. Let me know what you think. In the black area we can have a render of the character and the headline. Any thoughts?

Rocket Concept

I started on the rocket concept but hit a deadend with it because there are no drawing tablets as they are all being used by year 1. So what I have3 done is made a quick Maya model instead just to get an idea of the design I'm working on I'll post a render soon.

Maybe something like this????

Scenario Thought ?

Hey Guys, Just stumbled across these film Robinson Crusoe On Mars!

The film is basically about two astronauts and a monkey that are sent to mars. When they reach the planet, they are forced to use up their fuel to avoid an imminent collision with a meteor. With the ship now stuck in orbit, they have no choice but to eject to the surface, the first men on Mars.

There is a part of the film when the main character ruins out of oxygen and has trouble breathing, he lays on the floor where He hears a very faint hissing sound. Near him, on the floor, lay a few of the coal-like rock he uses for warmth. He realises that The rocks, when burned, release oxygen - and he is saved. I think we could uses this scenario and parody it for our own trailer.

An idea I had was that we could have it that they find what they think are some mas rocks and start to experiment on them, not knowing what they are doing as they are not actually scientist. Then the male and female character start to believe that these rocks are releasing oxygen and get excited and start to breath in oxygen from these rock but what they are actually breathing is the earths oxygen.

Just an idea, let me know what you think.

Just a thought

Hey guys on extending the idea with the frog maybe like Alan spoke about finding something they can worship as a god. Maybe after they find the frog they begin to worship it as a Martian?

Animatic So Far

Hey guys I know it's a bit rusty but it certainly gives an idea of what is going on. We need to think of some comical newspaper headlines to go with it.

Character Influence Maps for The Male Character

Just an Initial Influence map, to help with design the male character for our trailer. All the influence that are on the map, are all characters that we have spoken about it group meetings and I think that all 5 characters are perfect examples of what we want our male character to be like. An Ex-military, muscular built, extremely  jealous character.

Style

In terms of character style we all agree on the slightly exaggerated style of animations such as Pixars The Incredibles. Here is a rough influence map of the styles which can apply to our animation which we can use to inspire us.

Treatment

Establishing shot of the moon, Earth in the distance. There is over activity on the moon due to overpopulation and the camera zooms into a NASA headquarters with a rocket being prepped for ignition.

Voice over of the back story - (Subject to be shortened)
In 2000AD the Earth, over populated is dying from radiation. With the moon already colonised and unable to sustain any more population, there is a new race to colonise Mars in order to save the human race. They have picked a man and a woman who are ideal candidates to continue the human race.

During the voice over the camera cuts to the team walking in an Armageddon-esque way towards the ship. Then cuts to inside the ship for the countdown where the crew are suspended in stasis, camera cuts to each character's face with a montage of their back story placed over the top.

Ship takes off, splutter - fizzle - bang, the ship falls out of shot hurtling towards earth cutting to black. The camera shows the ship, nose buried into the ground, at a slight angle. Shot fades into the characters walking around with the ship in the background. They see what they think is the communications tower and then make their way towards it. Female is over excited about everything she sees "OH MY GOD IT'S A MARS ROCK...." which is repeated for different things i.e. water source. As the male and female 'discover' these things the monkey finds objects to instigate they are on Earth which they pay no attention to. While that's happening the male follows a fly that has got into his suit with his eyes and accidentally gasps breathing it in. He then runs around screaming that he's going to die, an over reaction.  Female find a coke can "OH MY GOD...." then continues on to discover a foot print throwing the can behind her which the monkey catches and becomes frustrated. The monkey points at something to which the camera pans out to reveal the group are underneath the Hollywood sign. Then the camera zooms out into space revealing they have gone to Earth instead of Mars.

Character Biographies

In 2000AD the Earth, over populated is dying from radiation due to fearsome nuclear battles with the World powers which started with the cold war. With the moon already colonised and unable to sustain any more population, there is a new race to colonise Mars in order to save the human race. NASA has already sent up ships to Mars with start up equipment to house a colony and have picked the first of many couples to be sent to colonise. They have picked a man and a woman who are ideal candidates to continue the human race.

Man -

Ex-military fighter pilot. Trained to be an astronaut. 30 years of age, 6 foot in height, Muscular build with a slight belly, extremely Patriotic who will claim Mars as the new America. Paranoid and jealous.

Woman -

Doctor/Scientist (No common sense). Trained to be an astronaut. 27 years of age, 5 foot 6 in height, physically fit and athletic build, overly excitable particularly discovering new things (girly girl)

Monkey -

Top secret NASA employee, sent to keep an eye on the mission to make sure it runs smoothly. Doesn't talk but is highly intelligent. 3 feet in height, Male, great mathematical genius.

Radio Tower near Hollywood sign

I like the idea of the crew trying to get communications with earth, and I think the radio tower is definitely a god send. As we are thinking of having the surrounding terrain with less vegetation due to our 'dying' planet I think this idea works well because of the mountainous area. I think the final reveal at the end planet of the apes style works well and maybe by expanding it and zooming further out into space to see the earth and showing the titles maybe?

I think our issue at the moment is coming up with the characteristics of the characters. I think the man could be a Stan Smith from American Dad, Zapp Brannigan from Futurama or Captain Quark from Ratchet and Clank kind of character. A big and muscly character with a slight belly who thinks that he is a hero but is extremely clumsy and has some form of random fear? Stan Smith has a random fear of Seagulls which is quite comical.

As for the female we could spawn our idea off Leela from Futurama in terms of characteristics maybe? I'm not too sure at the moment so tomorrow after postmodernism we should discuss the characters and then we can get a definitive idea as to how they act when they are on the way to the radio tower.

Character Activities.

When the Character crash land (in Hollywood) we should have them om a mission to find the other craft that were sent to Mars in previous missions which contain suppies and more perminant living quarters, communtications so they can speak to Earth etc. During thier journey they star to stumble apon things we discussed previously and they being to think there's aliens on Mars. The monkey is the onw who realises that they have crashed back to earth and eventually they stuble apon the Hollywood sign in a 'Planet of the Apes' type ending.

Posible Crash Landing Location.

As we spoke this could be a possible location. Although I think it would be better (as it is in the future when the Earth is dying) that we should amke it a little more barron.

Character Ideas

Ok so from what we spoke today we came up with the idea that it's an 'Adam and Eve' couple that are going to Mars to start the process of making the first collony on Mars.

They are the first of many couples to be sent to Mars.

They are picked because they are a physically perfect looking couple to repopulate the human race. Although they are trained as astronaut and have some scienticic background they are not the sharpest tools in the box.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela Futurama episode

I couldn't find any clips off Youtube but this is the name of the episode that Alan said about in the tutorial earlier. It's a good episode definately worth a watch.

Plot:

In the episode, Zapp Brannigan and Leela end up on a Garden of Eden-like world after fighting a planet-destroying satellite called V-Giny.

Cultural references -

The episode title itself is a spoof of Iron Butterfly's 1968 song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (originally titled "In the Garden of Eden"). The episode makes references to the typical 1950s B-Movie serials with Zapp Brannigan's dreams.[3] Zapp and Leela are in an Adam and Eve type planet and take on the roles while on the planet.[3] The Death Sphere is a reference to "Death Star" in Star Wars,[4] its creation and its name are a reference to V′Ger in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It is also a reference to the Star Trek: The Original Series episodes "The Changeling" (in reference to the fact that the V-chip and the USAF Flying Destiny colliding like the Nomad probe) and "The Doomsday Machine" (an ancient military starship that has gone rogue and destroyed several planets, before heading toward the Federation). Hermes uses a reference database called Janeway's Guide, a portmanteau of Jane's Fighting Ships and Kathryn Janeway.[5]

Final Idea

1. Title appears with an establishing shot of the rocket being loaded. (Voiceover)

2. Camera zooms into the entrance to the rocket. The astronauts walk toward the rocket passing the camera.

3. Cut to each characters back story i.e. - Monkey writing mathematical equations on blackboard, scientist dropping test tube etc.
4. Countdown with the rocket taking off.

5. Their different reactions on their faces when the rocket takes off.

6. Checks are made that the rocket is working okay and then auto pilot is turned on. The son copying his dad plays around with the controls and he could put in a different destination, that they are all unaware about. (son knocks drink on control panel, drink slowly heads towards important buttons on the panel)

7. With the auto pilot on, they all go into sleep in the hibernation pods for the rest of the journey. (camera focuses on the liquid seeping into the control panel causing sparks and malfunction flashing on the console)

8. Crash wakes everyone up and they think they are on Mars but have landed in the Grand Canyon.

9. The control panel is destroyed so they assume they are on mars and the communications are damaged. They receive a weak transmission which they only make out "Earth.......Destroyed...."

10. They assume they are the last humans alive and go to explore Mars.

11. Fly gets into the dad's suit then lands on his nose. Looks cross eyed at the fly then gasps and breathes it in making him choke.

12. Maybe the kids are fighting and they end up cracking their helmets and then they all realise that there is something strange is they can breath the air.

13. They all have their own realisations - one finds a footprint believing it to be Martian, Another finds running water believing they've discovered running water on Mars, Then the Monkey finds a coke can brushes it off and then realises they are still on Earth.

14. Then the Camera cuts out slowly revealing they are in the Grand Canyon and still on Earth.

Ideas for scenes and shots

Just a few ideas I had for different shot we could have.

1. Title appears with an establishing shot of the rocket being loaded.

2. Camera zooms into the entrance to the rocket. The astronauts walk toward the rocket passing the camera. When each character passes by the camera it will cut to a introduction of that character. This would be done for the whole family and the monkey.

3. Countdown with the rocket taking off.

4. Their different reactions on their faces when the rocket takes off.

5. Checks are made that the rocket is working okay and then auto pilot is turned on. The son copying his dad plays around with the controls and he could put in a different destination, that they are all unaware about.

6. With the auto pilot on, they all go into sleep in the hibernation pods for the rest of the journey.

7. When they finally wake up, the find that they have already on what they think is mars but actually they have landed in the Grand Canyon.

8. They go out to explore what they think is mars.

9. They find a foot print and they all freak out that there might be Martians of this planet.

10. Maybe the kids are fighting and they end up cracking their helmets and then they all realise that there is something strange is they can breath the air.

11. Camera pans out to reveal that they are standing in the Grand Canyon.

Fly in helmet shot.

This might prove hard to do, but I just had a thought that when the fly lands on the dudes nose that he gasps in shock and accidently sucks in into his month :)

Thinking of scenes/shots

From when we spoke before just to get an idea of shots etc that will be in the trailer.

Here's some ideas.

1. Establishing shot. Maybe NASA head quarters, rocket ready to take off.

2. Shots of team. Monkey writing mathematical equations on blackboard, scientist dropping test tube etc.

3. Rocket taking off.

4. Scientists going into hybination for the journey.

5. Something goes wrong with ship. (Maybe it's hit with small meteorites) Communications and navigation fail, sparks come from control pannels.

6. Ship is set to auto land on Earth due to malfunction, and ends up crash landing at the bottom of the grand canyon.

7. Crew awake to find themselves on 'Mars'.

8. They go out to explore and plan to get out of the canyon. (I think it might be best if it's Winter time) The scientist get exited about discovering running water.

9. They discover footprints.

10. The monkey discovers a rusty coke can.

11. Shot of camera zooming out from the Grand canyon and show the Earth.

Further from after group discussion - Shot of a fly in the helmet of the militant astronuat.

We would need some shots of Housten (NASA) looking as though they're perhaps trying to discover what happened.

Maybe the last shot 'Planet of the Apes' style ending with the coke can instead of the Statue of Liberty

The Jetsons Cartoon

Just remembered a cartoon that I used to watch The Jetsons. That is a great example of what we were talking about with Alan on Thursday, about a nuclear family being sent to mars.

The Jetsons is a prime-time animated American sitcom  from 1962–63 again from 1985–87. The Jetsons live in a futuristic world in the year 2062 that has a elaborate robotic contraptions, aliens, holograms, and whimsical inventions.

Lost in Space

Just finished watching Lost in Space (1998). I definitely think there is room for a slight parody of this especially twisting the characters a little into fitting in with our social culture. Like the daughter who video blogs could be one where she needs to be constantly on 'facebook'. Definitely worth us exploring the nuclear family model like Alan said which will make it much easier to come up with scenarios for our characters.
